Many RV owners enjoy boondocking, or camping without utilizing the hookups at a campsite. This can be a great way to get even closer to nature, but does pose some logistical challenges. Read on for tips on planning a successful RV boondock adventure.

Pick a Place to Boondock

Choosing the right location is crucial for a successful boondocking trip.

Federal lands, such as those managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and National Forests, are often open for dry camping. However, National Parks are typically not eligible for dry camping.

It's essential to verify local regulations before setting up camp, as some areas may be off-limits due to resource extraction or other purposes. You can also consider private property with the owner's permission.

Regardless of where you camp, always inform someone of your whereabouts, whether it's the landowner, a ranger, or local law enforcement. If an emergency should occur and you don’t return home on time, people will know where to look for you in order to send help.

Learn and Observe Any Regulations

Understanding and following regulations is paramount to a safe and responsible boondocking experience. These regulations can cover various aspects

Camping Duration

There are usually limitations on how long you can stay in one spot. Often, the limit is around 14 days, but it's important to confirm this for your specific area.

Waste Disposal

Proper waste management is critical. It's usually mandated that all trash is packed out of the area.

Fire Restrictions

Be aware of burn bans, as these will prohibit campfires. If a fire pit is allowed, use existing ones rather than digging new ones to preserve the landscape.

Other Regulations

Some areas may have bans on firearms or alcohol. Always call your local ranger or BLM agent to confirm specific rules for your chosen location if you hope to have those items during your RV boondock adventure.
