If you own a fifth wheel, the question really isn’t if you need a hitch. After all, a travel trailer can’t connect to a tow vehicle without one, and most people don’t get an RV so they can vacation in their driveway! Sunny Island RV has created this guide to help you find a fifth wheel hitch that’s right for you.

First Steps

Before you do anything else, take stock of both your budget and your experience. Never spend past your limit, and if necessary buy used or utilize financing to save money. When looking at hitches, consider your experience level. If you are new to towing a fifth wheel, it might be best to stick to a less complicated model until you learn the ropes. This applies to installation as well. Installing a hitch is complicated, and there is no shame in hiring a mechanic if you are not confident that you can complete the job without damage to the towing vehicle.

The Different Types Of Fifth Wheel Hitches

The 2-way pivot head is standard. It pivots forward and aft and is specially designed so that the truck handles slopes before the fifth wheel to reduce stress on the hitch. The 4-way pivot head offers the same features but can also pivot from side to side. This results in a smoother travel experience over uneven roads.

The universal rail hitch can be used with any trailer and doesn’t require that holes be drilled into your truck’s frame. The custom rail hitch can do the same, but also allows the use of personalized rails.

The single jaw hitch allows for easy connection. Like the 4-way pivot head, it offers a smooth travel experience. It is considered the safest of all the hitches. The double jaw hitch is very similar but has twice the power.

Start With The Tow Vehicle

Before you buy or try to install a hitch, remember that not all hitches may be compatible with your tow vehicle. Examine your tow vehicle to determine your options. If your truck bed is a bit short, consider finding an extended pin box. Also, remember to include the hitch when you are calculating how much your vehicle can tow. If you are in danger of going over the maximum, find a lighter hitch.
